U.S. Area 2013 Will Be Las Vegas

Hawaii Region Still Going There in 2012
U.S. to Explore Hosting International Convention in Hawaii in 2016

Area Dues Increase Coming

The U.S. Area of Y Service Clubs International will hold its next national convention in Las Vegas in 2013. The location was chosen by the Area Council, the governing body of the national organization, during its meeting in St. Louis, MO, July 5-7. The choice had widespread support among attendees at the U.S. Area Convention which followed the council meeting.
There was some discussion about whether the Hawaii Region might hold off its regional convention, planned for next year in Vegas, for a year so as to boost numbers at the Area meet, but the four-member Hawaii delegation to St. Louis decided not to pursue that and to let the Hawaii planning go ahead for 2012. (Hawaii was represented by Russ Lynch, Regional Director; Rick Lau, Immediate Past RD.; Phil Sammer, Immediate Past Area President; and Maurice Shimonishi, president of the Nuuanu Y Service Club.)
From casual conversations back here in the Islands, it seems both meetings will get solid Hawaii support.
Other actions by the U.S. Area Council, whose voting members are the Regional Directors across the country, included:

International Convention in Hawaii? The Area will explore asking Y Service Clubs International to let the U.S. host the 2016 International Convention, with Hawaii as the possible venue. The Hawaii Region, which would do some of the work with many tasks taken on by the Area and the International, recently approved exploring the idea and a committee will look into what’s involved. The U.S. Area, too, is just entering the exploratory stage.

Dues Increase. Dues to the U.S. Area will increase to $21 per adult member, up from $17, as revenues continue to fall behind expenses due to falling membership numbers. The change is to take effect April 1, 2012. Formal notice will come soon from the new Area Chief Financial Officer, Gene Koester in Torrance, California.
